The research also found that both a cesarean delivery as well as hospitalization for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) contributed to the increased rate of corticosteroid use. Importantly however the relationship between gestational age and corticosteroid use persisted even after adjusting for these factors.
Of note, is that a different Swedish study found a relationship between infants born extremely preterm -- between weeks 23 and 27 -- and asthma in young adulthood, but no increased risk for preterm babies born at least 27 weeks gestational age.
